Featured Books: November 2026

This November, we have chosen books for Native American Heritage Month and World Kindness Day on November 13.

The Story of Standing Rock

Written by Diana Crow-Wheel and Dawn Admire-Sanders. Illustrated by Diana Crow-Wheel. Edited by Dawn Admire-Sanders.

On April 1, 2016, LaDonna Brave Bull Allard, an elder member of the Standing Rock Sioux tribe and her friends established the Sacred Stone Camp to protest the Dakota Acess Pipeline (DAPL). Their goal was to protect the water supply for the Standing Rock Reservation. The camp was on Allard’s private land, and was a center for cultural preservation and spiritual resistance to the DAPL.

Protests at the pipeline site in North Dakota and drew indigenous people from throughout North America, as well as many other friends and supporters. It was the largest gathering of Native Tribes in 100 years.

This picture book tells that story along with many other stories. The teepees were built by those who love the earth. The paintings and drawings were painted by those that love the earth. The statue of Crazy Horse has a history that can teach those who listen. The pipeline has a history each one of us needs to learn.

The people who numbered in the thousands came from so far to share in this effort. They left their mark in the heart of all of us. The animals, children, and people made so many friends that will not be forgotten. The only thing left when the land was cleared was the statue “Not Afraid to Look.” You can find other sculptures from this artist in Santa Fe, New Mexico. This book is for all who keep the spirit of this effort to save the water.

I Feel Compassion When I See You Suffer

Written and illustrated by Karen White Porter. Edited by Dr. James Robert Porter, LMHC.

When the boy finds the dog trapped in the snow, he marches to the neighbor’s front door, ready to express his frustration. However, the door opens to reveal a neighbor who isn't indifferent, but struggling with a disability that has made it impossible to provide the care her pet deserves. In an instant, his anger turns to a powerful new emotion: compassion.

This moving installment of the I Feel… When…  series explores the bridge between judgment and empathy. With the support of his parents, the boy moves from being a critic to a helper, discovering how a community can come together to support both its human and animal members.

Rainbow Eagle is an Okla-Choctaw Native American Indian. His journey was facilitated by his full-blood Okla-Choctaw father and a loving and nurturing Christian mother. He is a Wisdom Keeper, honored with the responsibility of teaching an Ancient Native American Peace Shield drawing. Now that the Seventh Fire of the Anishinabe/Ojibwa traditions has been lit these original instructions, the teachings of Mother Earth, can help bring all life everywhere back into relationship. At this time, all of the traditional wisdom and truths are to be offered to all Earth People, to bring personal spiritual balance and to restore peace on our Mother Earth.

Rainbow Eagle has spent most of his life traveling among traditional Native Americans of United States, South America, Canada, and overseas learning from their most respected elders. He is a revered storyteller and teacher and has shared native wisdom in both traditional and non-traditional ways with many communities.
