Featured Books: August 2026

These are some of our books, which we have chosen to highlight this month. We hope you enjoy them!

Homeschooling in Times of Covid-19

Written by Karen White Porter and Dr. Martha Joseph Watts Edited by Patricia Ashton and Mary Bahr, NBCT

There are several reasons why you may be considering homeschooling. Some families do not feel safe putting children in local schools during times of uncertainty. Other families may be forced to homeschool because of the COVID-19 pandemic. Perhaps your town, state, or nation is in turmoil and unable to give you a reasonable sense of how your school will keep your children safe and provide them a quality education.

Homeschool can remedy many of these issues and avoid a one size fits all approach to teaching or learning. Whatever their reasons, I have always felt families’ reasons for homeschooling are justified. Families should be given the necessary information to choose the best options for their children’s education. With my advice, parents have been able to keep up with the State Standards. For this reason, I have prepared a step-by-step process to homeschool until you feel the public school system is the best choice for your family.

This colorful series opens the door to discussing emotions in an easy way for younger audiences.

#9. I Feel Confused When Rules Change

Written and Illustrated by Karen White Porter, Edited by Dr. James Robert Porter, LMHC

Confusion is hard to cope with. Everyone wants to be clear about rules and feel secure about boundaries in their life, but we all need to learn that rules change in different situations. Deb feels confused when the rules about toys and food change at school. Ada wants to help her share her birthday treats with classmates, but they both are surprised to learn the rules about that are different at school than they are at home. Ben, Fred, and Cal explain how the rules are different. This colorful book opens the door to discussing confusion in a nonthreatening way for younger audiences. Read this book to see how the Feeling Friends deal with their confusion.

#24. I Feel Proud When I Can Swim

Written and Illustrated by Karen White Porter, Edited by Dr. James Robert Porter, LMHC

Making the leap from the shallow steps to the deep end of the pool is a major milestone. In this rewarding story from the I Feel When series, Ada, Ben, Cal, Deb, and Ed take the plunge together. Under the patient guidance of their teacher, Mr. J, each child discovers that bravery isn't just about the final result—it’s about every courageous kick and stroke along the way.

When Mr. J awards each of them a medal for their hard work, the group heads home with more than just a trophy; they carry the pride of knowing they conquered their fears through persistence.

#25. I Feel Shy When I Am New

Written and Illustrated by Karen White Porter, Edited by Dr. James Robert Porter, LMHC

A gentle, empowering guide for every child who has ever wanted to hide behind a tall pair of legs. Entering a new classroom, a noisy birthday party, or a different playground can feel like a giant mountain to climb. In this sensitive and relatable addition to the I Feel… When… series, we meet Ed, who is facing a brand-new situation. Ed’s tummy is doing flips, and he isn't quite ready to join the circle.

Through Ed’s journey, young readers learn that shyness is a normal feeling—not a permanent label. This story provides a "social toolkit" for children to navigate the quiet moments before they find their voice.

Turtle One and Turtle Two

Written by Karen White and Christi Grace Porter, Illustrated by Karen White Porter

This is a story about two turtles. One turtle follows all of the rules, while the other turtle would rather ignore the rules and play outside. When it is time to go to dance class, the turtle who follows the rules can go and have fun, while the turtle who didn’t follow the rules has to stay home.

This book is a wonderful opportunity to share with a child who is having difficulty following directions and rules. It helps children realize that it is really up to them to decide how they need to behave. The world gives us so many opportunities, and consequences for our actions. This book with its calm, cool, relaxing colors illustrates the choice each one of us has every day to do what we need to do in life.
